Totem Poles

Stamp design

Totem poles tell a story and are the most visible example of the rich woodcarving tradition among Natives of the Northwest Pacific Coast in British Columbia. These stamps show the interconnection between all realms of existence (earth, water, sky), with each stamp representing a part of mythology. To reflect the verbal, fluid nature of storytelling, I illustrated each stamp, with the exception of the totem pole, since it is an artifact that has withstood the test of time and has the power to visually convey meaning on its own.
